A group of species, normally recognized as a taxon, that does not contain all descendants of the common ancestors.

In the phylogenetic systematics paraphyletic and polyphyletic groups are not accepted as real taxon and are called "artificial taxon" instead. See also monophyletic and polyphyletic.
