Melanagromyza azawii Spencer, 1973

IMPORTANT CHARACTERS
Adults
Wing length: 2.2 - 2.4 mm. Ocellar triangle large, extended anteriorly, the brownish color is contrasting with the black frontorbits. Due to dense white pubescence, lunule with dark surface, appearing silvery.
First and second tibia normally with two outstanding spines. Abdominal tergites in two dark colours: anteriorly reddish-brown, posterior part of each tergite black. Surface of tergites always with greenish glimmer.
Immature stages
The posterior spiracles possess central horns surrounded by the spiracular openings.

BIONOMICS
Internal stem feeder.

HOST PLANTS
Known from Vicia faba and Sesamum indicum (sesame) (Spencer, 1973).

DISTRIBUTION

Known from Iraq, India and Somalia.

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
Apparently only occasionally damaging. Spencer, 1973 described only the nature of damage on beans, but did not discuss the economic significance. Later Pillai et al., 1980 reported serious infestations of sesame.
