Immature stages: The specialized pupa of the Diptera in the taxon Cyclorrhapha. A puparium consists of the hardened skin of the third instar larva enclosing the actual pupa (L bryoniae puparia.pct). The process of building the puparium is called pupariation.

The anterior part of the puparium is forming a cap separated from the remaining part by puparial cleavage lines (puparia Tropicomyia/phytomy.pct). It can be opened by the emerging adult fly by expanding its ptilinum.

Alternative forms for puparium : puparia, puparial, pupariation.
