Subgenus Cerodontha

Cerodontha Rondani, 1861

Adults
Only two scutellar bristles, spines or conspicuous projections at the apical corner of the third antennal segment. Head from lateral view often about as long as high, legs rather long.

Immature stages
Posterior spiracles with much more than three bulbs either distributed on branching stalks Cer denticornis Larva SEM5.pct or with a spherical appearance.

Bionomics
All species are mining mainly in the sheaths of grass leaves, which are wrapping the shoot. Some species even live in the stalks themselves. This is especially true for the "Xenophytomyza" species.
