Liriomyza urophorina Mik, 1894
The type species of the genus Liriomyza is characterized by an extremely long female ovipositor and, correspondingly, a long male aedeagus.
IMPORTANT CHARACTERS
Adults
Wing length: 2 - 2.5 mm. Frontorbital region dark yellow or light brown. Both vertical bristles are situated on light cuticle but between them a dark band is situated. Frons rather dark yellow or light brown. Last abdominal tergites with longer marginal hairs than anterior ones.
Female terminalia
Oviscape extremely long and thin (see Spencer, 1973).
Male terminalia
Matching to the long ovipositor, both aedeagal apodeme and aedeagus are extremely long Lir urophorina genitalia.pct. It might be remarkable that the basiphallus is extremely extended, whereas the distiphallus has the normal size like in other Liriomyza species.
BIONOMICS
Seed feeder.
HOST PLANTS
Found on the ornamental plants Lilium martagon L., Lilium candidum and other lilies.
DISTRIBUTION
A European species, records only from Germany and Austria (Spencer, 1973, 1990).
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
According to Spencer, 1973 a dangerous pest for ornamental lilies.
