Melanagromyza vignalis

Melanagromyza vignalis Spencer, 1959

Resembles Melanagromyza chalcosoma, the two have an overlapping distribution but vignalis is smaller and all frontorbital setulae are reclinate (Spencer, 1973).

IMPORTANT CHARACTERS
Adults
Wing length: 2.2 - 2.4 mm. Mesonotum with greenish, abdomen with reddish sheen. Second tibia with or without outstanding bristles.
Immature stages
Puparium dark orange-brown, both posterior spiracles of puparium situated on a rounded projection. The about 12 spiracular bulbs are arranged around a central scar. Central horns are missing.

HOST PLANTS
Vigna catjang (black-eyed pea) V. unguiculata (cow pea), Glycine sp.

BIONOMICS
Pod feeder, not known in detail (Spencer, 1973).

DISTRIBUTION
Africa: Sudan, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Kenya, South Africa (Spencer, 1973).
