Liriomyza quadrata (Malloch, 1934)

The species is closely related to Liriomyza braziliensis. Body coloration is variable.

IMPORTANT CHARACTERS
Adults
Wing length 2.3 - 3.2 mm.
Mesonotum yellowish white in front of scutellum, several acrostichals on the yellowish patch medioclinate. Acrostichals are rather long. Legs generally light but the femora might be more yellowish than the distal leg segments. Squamae are broadly darkish.
Male terminalia
Surstyli rather large, rounded, inner side with several strong spines. Tip of epandrium with apical spine. Distiphallus rather long with two broad appendages; side arms of basiphallus well developed.
Female terminalia
Oviscape dorsally flattened.
Immature stages
Posterior spiracles with three bulbs, puparium pale yellowish.

BIONOMICS
Leaf miner on the upper surface, the larvae of the last two instars form large blotch mines.

HOST PLANTS
Solanaceae: Solanum tuberosum (potato), Lycopersicon esculentum L. (tomato), Nicotiana tabacum L., also Solanum nigrum L. (Spencer, 1973).

South America.
